Weekend Writing Prompt #132 – Draconian – by Sammi Cox
Sammi Cox’s Rules:
The challenge is simple: each week you will be given an exact number of words you can use to write a poem or piece of prose. You can use any format or style you like; go wherever your inspiration takes you. The only rules are these:
- your poem/prose must contain this week’s word. The word does not have to count towards the exact word count total – it can be in the title, or the first letters of the lines of a poem can spell it out – you can be as creative as you want as long as it’s there somewhere.
- the length of your poem/prose must match the number of words stated in this week’s challenge. No more. No less.

(Last Weekend I wrote)
“I can’t wait to take this DNA test and confirm this ineffable woman is lying and get her off of my back.”
“I told you that it is your baby, and you can’t get rid of me that easy,” Linda replied to Ron.
Linda reaches for the needle and jabs it into her abdomen, jabbing at it over and over.
“Are you crazy, woman?” And they rush her off immediately.
********This week!********
Ron regretted his draconian ways of dealing with Linda and her baby, especially if it was his. He felt responsible for the death of the fetus. While he sat there beating himself up, they were working on Linda.
They were searching for a heartbeat. Silence. Ron was crying, and Linda was shouting and cursing, and they finally knocked her out so they could work on her. With her quiet, they could hook her up for an ultrasound.
“There is no heartbeat,” Ron said haltingly. “He or she is dead.”
“Actually, sir, she wasn’t pregnant. There’s no fetus here.”
“I knew she was lying.”
