Wine Tasting

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

“Oh, Jonathan did you have to knock over the display of wine bottles for tonight?” Katy began picking them up and examining them to see if any of them were broken. “Have you been drinking already tonight?”

“Darling you know I can’t wait when I see a bottle of wine. I had to at least try one which was too dry by the way. I’ll go to the wine cellar and get another bottle for the display. I think everyone should try that one at least and see if they agree with me. I doubt any are broken since you set them up on the carpeted area of the living room.

“Jonathan please don’t touch another bottle before everyone gets here. Now I must set this back up and you are to stay away from it, so you don’t knock it over even if it is only one bottle you tried. I want to open them fresh when the group of wine tasters is here.”

“Okay, Katy I am sorry. Want me to help you set that up?”

“No Jonathan, just go get a new bottle to replace the one you opened.”

Just then the doorbell sounded.

Rules from Susan Spaulding, the host of Sunday Photo Fiction:

HERE IS THE REAL EXCITING NEWS!  Donna B McNichol has agreed to take over Sunday Photo Fiction.  The tradition lives on! Our plan is for her to begin next Sunday (with me as back-up, just in case). Donna is a writer and has experience with photo challenges, so I know this transition will be very smooth.  Please welcome her as warmly as you did me.  Some of you may already know her, but for those who don’t you can visit her at site at http://dbmcnicol.com/

Dear Sunday Photo Fiction Peeps

I want to share some exciting news.  Several months ago I made a bold decision to start my own business. Initially, I thought this business would be something I would grow into as I moved closer to retirement; however, circumstances have made me re-think my timeline and I now am ready to jump into it full force. Sadly, when one door opens, another must close and so it is with sadness that I will no longer be able to continue Sunday Photo Fiction. My last post will be June 30, 2019.  As when I took over this endeavor from Al Forbes, I am also offering the site to anyone who is willing to take it over and maintain the tradition. If you are interested, please email me at SundayPhotoFiction@gmail.com. (Someone has already stepped up)

I have very much enjoyed my short tenure as host and have found much happiness in creating stories from photographs. I hope you too have found some happiness here.

And now for today’s post:

Welcome to 2019 and Sunday Photo Fiction! Each week I will post a new photograph, taken either by myself or donated by a member of the community. The challenge is to write a story using 200 words or less based, on the prompt. When you are done, post your story and the photo prompt on your blog. Make sure you give proper credit when using the photo.

For those who wish to use InLink to link their story to SPF, use the “Click Here to Enter”  icon below to add your story to the SPF collection. An alternative to InLink is to leave a pingback in the comments below.

Cover Your Eyes

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

“Me first Tommy,” Kenny said.

“No, I think I should be first since I am the oldest,” Tommy said.

“You’re always first, Tommy,” Kenny said, tears coming to his eyes.

“Fine, you go first this time.”

Tommy gets a crate to boost him as he puts his foot on the first branch and tries to get a good grip on the pointed branch above.

This whole tree has these little pointed branches. They are close together and ideal for climbing for smaller kids other than they were dangerous to the eyes if you lose your grip and slip while climbing.

“No!” The words were uttered quickly in the hopes of stopping her son from trying to climb the tree and possibly hurt himself.

“Ah Ma,” Kenny gets ready to cry again.

“I said no, and I meant no! Climbing that tree is dangerous in many ways. Go ride your bikes.”

Brothers!

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Didi’s special birthday party included a sleepover. Her dad put up a tent for the girls to sleep in.

The girls were planning on sleeping outside alone provided none of the other parents objected or any of the girls were afraid.

Didi had slept outside in the tent a lot with her sisters so she wasn’t worried at all.

The other mothers objected, and they only agreed if either Didi’s older sister or her mother was with them. Didi was disappointed, but if she wanted to sleep in the tent she had to agree. She would much prefer her older sister than her mother, but that would depend on whether Susan was available.

Susan had a date which left her mother. Her mother wasn’t any happier sleeping in the tent either, but she had promised Didi they could sleep outside so it was up to her.

The girls arrived and they climbed into the tent with Didi and her mom. After all the fun died down and they were ready for sleep, a moaning began outside the tent. The girls were scared and didn’t listen to Didi’s mom about it being nothing.

Sudden laughter outside showed Didi’s two brothers.

Water Everywhere?

(Continued from last 2 weeks and the week before)

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

As Myra surveyed the emptiness around her except for the little guys with the arrows. She was frantic to find her family.

There was a large crack of thunder and that storm that had been threatening over at the fast food restaurant suddenly broke loose and started to pour.

As she watched, the little guy standing in front of her car and pointing his arrow at her was struck by the pouring rain and he simply disappeared. She looked around and not only were the little guys disappearing, but the townspeople were reappearing in the positions they had been in when they were shot and disappeared.

The rain continued and from her position, the little guys were gone. Her friends were reappearing, and the carnival runway was packed with customers scrambling for cover from the rain.

She didn’t know what was happening other than that water made the little guys disappear and her friends were reappearing. This must be the secret. The rain melted them. She looked at their pyramid and slowly watched it disappear into a pile of dirt as the rain continued to pour. Her son and husband knocked on her car window. They were all safe.

Where Did That Come From?

(Continued from last week and the week before)

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Myra was alarmed at the little guys with arrows pointed at them that were all over the car. She jammed her foot onto the gas and the sudden lurch knocked the guys off. She flew out of the parking lot headed towards the carnival site.

She didn’t know what was going on. As she pulled into the carnival grounds, she saw a pyramid made of rocks. Where did that come from?

Even though the carnival should be in full swing there were no people to be found. She did see one of those little guys with the arrows though. They were here too. Was the pyramid their spaceship? One of the rocks slid aside and several of them poured out armed with arrows too.

She saw Jerry, the town drunk, stagger into the park. One of the little guys shot him with an arrow and he disappeared right in front of their eyes. Is this where everyone went? How many townspeople were left?

Myra began to worry about her son again and for that matter, her husband had left for work earlier. The arrows flew at the car but weren’t strong enough to break through the glass. Safe for now!

Deserted, Here Too?

(Continued from last week)

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Myra had promised the twins that they could get food at Wendy’s tonight before the carnival. They piled in the car. Myra had to keep telling them to be quiet.

As she pulled into town, she saw a huge black cloud forming over the area where the Wendy’s was. She didn’t like the look of the cloud as she envisioned a huge storm hitting the area just as they got to the carnival.

She rushed the twins through dinner and then as they headed back to the car, she saw there were no people around at all. The cars on the highway were sitting there empty. She didn’t like this.

She took the twins back inside to use their phone. She wanted to call home and check on her older son. They looked around and all the employees were gone.

Myra headed back to the car and got the twins settled. As she turned around and turned the car on, she saw a small figure with an arrow pointed at her. She quickly accelerated and ran him over. The car was suddenly covered with little men all aiming their arrows at them. She locked the doors.

Deserted?

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Ellie didn’t see anybody else around the area. She couldn’t believe how deserted it was. Just on the other side of the trees was a carnival and the midway music was playing so where were the people?

The teenagers, especially, would sneak over on this side and make out with each other.

Other than the music, there were no sounds. Usually, there was laughing, screaming, and people enjoying a carnival.

Ellie wondered if she should head over to the carnival and check things out, but she was scared. Something wasn’t right. She wished that Bill was with her. Come to think of it, where was he? He was supposed to meet her about now, here in the park by the gazebo.

Suddenly the midway music stopped completely. There was dead silence. Somehow that was even scarier to Ellie. She looked around frantically for Bill or anyone, human of course.

Ellie watched in horror as hundreds of tiny little figures came running from the carnival and into the park. “Ellie, watch out,” Bill shouted.

She turned around behind her and she watched Bill grab the mini arrow in his heart and sink to the ground. Hundreds of arrows stung her.

The Puppet and the Lady

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Stealthily sneaking through the dark shadows in the tent the puppet made his way to the tent of the world’s smallest lady. He does this routine every night and every night he hopes he doesn’t get caught. He loves Irina, the world’s smallest lady and she him, but the world doesn’t know that he isn’t really a puppet, but a prince who had a spell cast on him hundreds of years ago. Irina is beautiful, but she too had a spell put on her by the same wizard. Fate had put them in the same circus. They fell in love.

Although the wizard made him a puppet, he didn’t take his life away from him so he could still love his lovely Irina. They lived for their nightly tryst. They hadn’t kissed as the wizard warned them that if they did, he would freeze them forever as the puppet and the beautiful statue. They were too afraid to test whether he was serious or not. There love would remain unrequited.

Late for Brunch

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

The ladies were having their weekly Sunday brunch.  Sadie had brought the pitcher of iced tea out to the table and Marcie was right behind her with a tray of glasses. Veronica was busy making finger sandwiches in the kitchen.

Usually there were four of them having brunch each week. The girls worried a little about Ruth, but they had a lot to do to finish setting up the food and drink. Ruth didn’t drink the iced tea. She always had a mixed drink. Marcie started to mix Ruth’s drink once she was done her part in the set-up.

Ruth was still not here. Now the women were getting really concerned.

There was a bang against the front door. It wasn’t a knock exactly just a bang. When Marcie opened the door, Ruth fell into the room gasping. Sadie called 9-1-1. Marcie noticed a rock and wondered what it was. Did someone hit Ruth with it?

The EMT’s arrived quickly and started to work on her. Before they could get her loaded onto their gurney Ruth took her last breath. She never said a word.

Static!

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Milly was stressing out about the static on her radio. She wanted to hear the news and upcoming weather. The town’s big celebration was coming in a few days and she was afraid the rain would continue and ruin all her plans.

She tried the radio again. “What the…,” she wants to throw the radio across the room. She doesn’t have a TV or a smart phone, so she is stuck relying on her radio and it is non-stop static.

She decides to go outside and see what it feels like now. She reaches for the doorknob.

She gasps as a shock runs up her arm. She tries again. Still giving off a shock. “What is going on here?”

She decides to grab the knob and just pull it open. She must get outside. Giving a quick pull the door finally opens and her arm tingles again.

She just stares in horror at this huge tower that has appeared in her backyard overnight. It must be the reason for the electrical interruption in her radio and the electric shocks in her doorknob.
