Flipping Houses

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

I enjoy watching the shows where they flip houses. There are plenty of them galore on cable tv. Take your pick.

There are some of these programs that show expensive houses, and then on top of that, they spend large amounts of money to restore them. They buy these houses sight unseen at times. They have no idea what they will find inside. There are hoarder’s delights, disgusting messes including animal and human feces, and some with either animals or people living inside.

On the other type of show, the flipping companies bid on houses about to be torn down and rarely spend more than $1000 on them. This makes more sense to me than the ones that spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy and then find a moldy, termite-infested home and have to pay several hundreds of thousands more to fix it. At times even the foundations are cracked.

Airport Mishap

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

The airport lounge was packed with holiday travelers. The snowstorm raging outside put most flights on delay. Families with small children were having trouble keeping their children under control for such a long period.

John and Carrie’s little girl had a red coat and hood. Suddenly John took off across the lounge and grabbed a little girl out of her mother’s arms. The mother began screaming, and John headed back to his wife.

Security arrived and grabbed John, who hadn’t realized that the little girl wasn’t his daughter. His wife turned around to see what all the fuss was about, and she was holding their daughter in her arms.

“John, what the hell are you doing with that little girl? Cassandra is right here in my arms,” Carrie said. “Let that little girl go, you idiot!”

“Oh, geez, I’m sorry. I thought it was my little girl. They’re dressed the same, and I couldn’t see her face.”

“Do you want to press charges ma’am,” the security guard asked.

“No, I can understand how he felt, and I might have done the same thing. We have to be careful with our children.”

Chairs in the Air

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

The crew had worked hard setting up for the pageant that night on the beach. They set up outside because the weather report was for a beautiful night.

The girls lined up in their gowns for the initial start of the pageant. Since it was a county pageant, they lined up in alphabetical order of the state’s counties.

The audience was starting to file in and seat themselves. The pageant officials had reserved seats for the families. The rest of the audience sat behind them in no particular order.

As the announcer starts the program, the breeze begins to pick up. The contestant’s hair and dresses are starting to blow around.

The sky darkens. The waves are picking up. There is barely time to get inside to safety. Everyone is crammed into the lobby of the hotel.

The guests and contestants watch the chairs on the beach begin to blow around. Trash and kids toys blow into the lobby window.

The skies darken more than usual and as quick as it started it was over. People start venturing out and stop.

Strung up through the stairs were a lot of the chairs caught on the rungs and on each other.

Selfie Disaster

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

“Aw Mom just take your selfie already so we can send them all in one text to Callie,” Marshall said.

“I don’t remember how to take them.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Look, Junior, you know how much trouble I have with this smartphone. Nothing has changed. I would prefer to go back to my old phone. Why do I need this smartphone anyhow? I prefer to use my desktop computer. Just take my picture with your phone and send that picture. Why does it have to be a selfie?”

“We just want them to be all the same. I will set it up and you will see your picture in the frame and you then just hit the button on the camera. Do you think you can handle that, Mom?”

“I suppose so, but I don’t see why you can’t just take my picture yourself.”

“Here, Mom, it is all set up and ready to go. Make sure you are in the frame the way you want it and hit the camera button.”

There was a flash, and then Mom said, “Here it’s all done. Don’t ask me again.”

Birdie Costume

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Kellie had a costume party to go to. She searched for a costume at the local store. Nothing suited her. Suddenly in the back of the store, she found a bag and looked inside. She found a bird costume. It had a red-breast, so she assumed it was a robin red-breast. She paid the salesgirl and headed home.

She pulled up videos on the computer to get an idea of how the bird acts. She got a few ideas on movements and practiced them. She thought they looked convincing.

Arriving at the party she was shocked to find out no one else was dressed in a costume. They had played a prank on her and tricked her into wearing a costume. As they started to laugh at her she burst into tears.

Enjoying the Beach

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Anya and Rollie were just sitting on the beach day after day, enjoying the warm weather and occasional thundershower. They were at a stage in their life where they didn’t have a schedule to be followed and were happy just being with each other no matter what life brought them.

They had both lost their spouses and had always been friends, so it was natural for them to spend their remaining time together. They each had their own hut, but after a particularly nasty storm, Anya’s was completely destroyed. They had no choice but to share Rollie’s. Anya was horrified. She asked him to see if there was another one available.

He asked, but the people living here were long term owners. He asked at the office if they were going to rebuild it. They were sorry, but they lost ten cabins in the storm and couldn’t afford to rebuild them all. All owner’s names would be put in a hat, and they would draw out five names and restore those.

Rollie told Anya the news, and they prayed that Anya’s was one of the ones to be rebuilt. Anya cried when she heard her name called.

Jumping for Joy

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Neto was trying to buy an apartment in this building just off the square. He had done his homework and was satisfied he had done the best he could do to persuade the owner to sell. Now Neto just had to wait for an answer. He was spending his waiting time dancing around the square and praying for the phone to ring with a positive response.

His phone was ringing, and so he dug it out of his pocket and answered. Mr. Newton had good news for Neto. He had been approved as the owner of the apartment, and so Neto started jumping with joy.

Taking a Dive

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Rose and Martin had bought their first house in Florida. They noticed the houses around them all had these enormous screened-in patios in their back yard around their pools.

As they met their neighbors, they started noticing these people left all their back patio doors open at all time creating an open house layout. They finally asked someone why they had these screens on the back of their houses. It enlarged their home they were told, and it was like having an indoor pool as well.

They didn’t have enough money yet having just bought this house, so they decided to wait, but as the days went by, people told them they had to worry about alligators coming up to use their pool. The screens would keep them out.

Rose and Martin were beginning to wonder. What were the chances of an alligator coming up to use their pool?

One day something happened to make them reconsider.

They were having a large barbecue. Martin went to clean out the barbecue grill and suddenly yelled.

“What is wrong, Martin,” Rose yelled from the house.

“We have company,” he yelled back at her and then entered the house.

“What do you mean we have company? It is really early.”

“I mean I opened up the barbecue grill, and it had several lizards in it. I talked to the neighbor, and they said it was normal, that is why they screened in their back yards and covered the pool. That keeps out the alligators and lizards from getting in.”

“Martin, we need to get a screen asap. It would also open up our pool area nicely and then we could have a covered pool as well. I like the idea. Please.”

“Ok, you win. We’ll get a screened-in porch as well. I will start asking where to get one at the party.”

“Oh, Martin, thank you so much. I would hate to run into an alligator in the pool one morning.”

Treatment Day

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Although the waiting room was much more modern than the one I remembered as a kid, it is there for the same reason. It’s a doctor’s waiting room, and I’m going through a long spate of an illness that simply won’t go away. The treatment requires a needle, and I’m afraid of them. One needle is supposed to treat it and make it go away, but it isn’t working.

“As a child, I used to run down the long halls as far away as I could get from the doctor,” I told the receptionist.

“I hope you don’t plan on doing that now, Mrs. Jones.”

“With all this weight and my age, I doubt I would get far. I reckon I will have to take the shot, like it or not, but why aren’t the shots working,” I sighed to myself.

The receptionist smiled to herself. The doctor was giving her a placebo to make her keep coming back and paying for the expensive treatment. This treatment is known for its failure, and the doctors all like it that way. Eventually, they will give the patient the real one, and they won’t have to come back after that usually, but why not milk it out while they can.

Moving Day

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

“Yo, Roscoe, have you seen the orange chair in your travels back and forth to the old house?”

“Penny, do we need that chair? It’s ugly!”

“Yes, it’s important to me. It came from my grandmother’s house, and she gave it to me specifically in her will because I always sat in it.”

“You know it is the ugliest chair I have ever seen. How many times do I need to tell you that?”

“I don’t care what you think. It’s important to me, and that is all that should matter to you.”

“I left it outside on the street in the alley beside our house. Someone has probably picked it up by now.”

“You had better hope it is still there, Roscoe, or I might throw you out in the alley.”

Mumbling to himself, Roscoe finds his truck keys and heads out to the alley.

The front doorbell sounds through the house and Penny goes to see who is calling already. She ends up looking at her orange chair in her sister’s arms. “Look what I found Penny? I always wanted this chair. Now I have one too.”

“That’s my chair, Patty. Give it back!”

“No way!”
