Tresspassing

by Teresa Smeigh May 2020

John was perched precariously on the stone and casting his line deep into the causeway. He ignored the sign saying “Private Property! No Fishing Off the Rocks!” and kept on casting out his line.

His boat, the “Jenny Lee,” named after his wife who lost her battle with cancer last year, was anchored about 50 feet out in the deeper waters of the causeway. The sun was shining on the boat, and she had a fresh coat of paint. He admired her for a few minutes before returning to casting off again. So far, he hadn’t caught anything, but he just wanted something to occupy his mind so he wouldn’t dwell on Jenny Lee’s last days. He and Jenny Lee had often gone fishing all over the coast. Sometimes taking a long trip, just the two of them and talked about their future together long before the cancer struck.

John knew he wasn’t supposed to be fishing here. He could read the sign, but he just wanted to see if there was anything worth catching. He wasn’t sure who the property belonged to, but he had never seen a living soul whenever he ran his boat down this way. It was a beautiful place, and Jenny Lee always loved their time running up and down the causeway.

A shot rang out, and John ducked and turned. There were three angry men with guns aimed at him coming down the strip of land. Another shot rang out, and John dropped his rod and dove into the water and swam as fast as he could. Another shot rang out not far from him. He grabbed the boat and hauled himself up and quickly started the engine.

He made a run for it and hoped none of the shots hit his boat. He was thankful Jenny Lee wasn’t with him today. He would be lucky to get out of here alive. Another shot passed real close to his head, and he could see the three men were getting closer to the tip of the land.

The next shot hit the gas tank, and the boat exploded with a mighty roar. John was thrown free of his boat and started to swim as fast as he could. If he could just make it to the other side of the causeway to another piece of land, he stood a chance of getting away since the men didn’t have a boat to follow him in.

Climbing up the rocks to the land, he quickly ran through the rocks and headed for the forest on the other side. He didn’t hear any more shots, and he breathed a sigh of relief. Hopefully, the men thought they got him and had gone home.

He walked through the woods until he reached a road. He followed it until a truck came by. Hoping it wasn’t his friends with the guns, he put his thumb out for a ride.

The truck stopped, and three men were inside. His heart started to pound. He couldn’t tell if it was them or not. The man closest to him pulled out a gun and shot him and fatally wounded him. He was on his way to be with Jenny Lee.

This is the continuation of John and Susan. I have decided to make this a book. I am working on that on NANOWRIMO since there is a beginning that needs to be told. Part of these prompts won’t fit into the book but will use some of them eventually after a proper beginning. This manuscript now has a beginning, middle and end although it is not fleshed out yet. It is more like a slightly detailed outline.

********************

This is the end of the story right now. I may post the beginning I started on since this ended up being the middle and the end, but it is (the whole story) unedited and at times written to fit a certain prompt. After NANOWRIMO I took out the parts that I had changed as I kept changing where the story was going. It is currently more like a novella than a novel for sure. I am not really writing a lot right now. I just am not feeling it. I have a half-written memoir piece that needs work as well. I only posted the first four chapters of that so far. Here’s the ending as it now stands for the “Royal Mixup”.

Drawing to a Close

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Jack headed back to the castle after being reassured that the boys would be sent back by his father, John. He told Joanne what he knew while they waited to meet the boys that were supposedly theirs. Depending on the outcome of the tests, the Princess would most likely be arrested for kidnapping the boys and replacing them with others, and they had no idea where she got them. Their grandfather was only trying to save them from her and make sure they were taught how to run a Kingdom. The King and Queen, after confirmation, would most likely be set free and left to run the Kingdom as they saw fit and make sure the boys were ready to run the Kingdom when the time came.

If Oliver indeed wasn’t ready to be a King, but John was, then that would be decided at the time. It was merely a matter of time of their births and who was who. They were identical after all, just like their grandfather.

They would legally adopt the two boys they raised and add their two biological sons and call it a family. The naming could be confusing, but then again, if the royal twins stayed in the castle until the time was ready to do their duty and the other two went home to the USA with Jack and Joanne, it wouldn’t be that difficult after all. Things would go on as they had been for now.

Young voices raised through the castle. Their boys were home. The doctor was waiting, and the tests were taken. After a short wait, the news arrived. The boys were Jack and Joanne’s. They spent hours explaining everything that happened and that nothing had to change. Jack still wasn’t interested in being a prince or a King, and both the royal twins were happy at the castle, although like Richard told them Oliver was not interested in being a King any more than Jack was. Like father, like son, it seemed. They would take care of that when the time came.

Joanne got busy planning her dream wedding. The Queen finally accepted her as the mother of her grandchildren and helped her. It was the grandest wedding the Kingdom had ever seen, and the Kingdom wouldn’t forget it for a long time.

After offering their thanks to Jack’s father and Richard’s wife for taking such good care of their children, Jack, Joanne, and the boys they raised and adopted headed back to the USA. They combined their properties, and the kids from the area loved both the farm and the old house that Jack had bought. They didn’t change a thing.

The Saga Continues – Who Are These Twins

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Jack was avoided by almost everyone on his way over. He would have to have a royal proclamation made to insist that everyone cooperated with his questioning. He needed to know the whole story as he was now the acting King, while a new one was officially proclaimed by the customary laws. Jack was pretty sure the twins, as their father and a lawyer, weren’t in any shape to take on the leadership as it stood now.

Reaching the castle, he went to find Joanne, who was seeing that everyone was fed. Once a mother, always a mother. He smiled at her and waved. She handed him a sandwich and a plate of chips along with a glass of soda. They both smiled that such simple food was now available here in the castle kitchen.

“How did it go,” Joanne asked him while swallowing a sip of soda?

“I think we have a long road ahead of us. I will know later once I start going through the King’s papers and interviewing everyone who is ignoring me right now. It might be a good idea to call the USA and get some more farmers out there to help with the farm. I have a staff in the place where I live, but I know you helped out the farmers along with John. Speaking of John, how are all the boys doing?”

“They are speaking a little bit among themselves, but they all seem shy and don’t know what to say, even John, who is a chatterbox, is being abnormally quiet. I feel bad for all of them.”

“Ok let me know once the doctor has the results from the DNA tests. I am going to start the royal proclamation and make a list of who I need to talk to first. That will take some time, and then tomorrow, I will hope to start going through the papers. I am not looking forward to 16 years worth of paperwork. Who knows what I might find?”

Sighing, Jack heads to the royal King’s office and shuts the door. He checks previous proclamations and writes one up and lists the people he expects to talk to today or tomorrow at specific times. Jail time would be appointed to those disregarding the royal proclamation.

The proclamation is announced, and slowly the cook knocks on the open door frame of the office. She looks frightened.

“I am not going to hurt you. I just want to know what you know about what has been going on around here while I was gone. I had appointed friends to keep me abreast of the happenings in the castle and the town, and they reported that everything was fine. I trusted them, and then this happens. I don’t blame you, but if you know anything at all, I will be most thankful for any information.”

“Well, I know the King and Queen took that Princess Isabella and gave her full run of the castle, and then one day she arrives here with a double pram with two little boys who looked like twins in it. She took them upstairs and told everyone her husband, who we all know you divorced her, had given her the boys to raise on her own. She took over the nursery and walked them every day, but even I knew she wasn’t feeding them the right food for their age or even teaching them anything. Those boys are behind in their studies because the Princess didn’t get much schooling herself since she was a female. In my opinion, they aren’t fit to run the Kingdom yet. Not even with the two of them together. Prince Jack, we need you back to run this place. I hope you are considering it.”

“Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere for quite some time. I won’t leave my people floundering around with no leadership. Depending on the investigation, punishment will be meted out to my parents as the Kingdom sees fit. You are free to go, and thank you for talking so freely to me.”

The cook left, and the Princess’ handmaiden was there. “Come in, Stella, I won’t bite. You can be honest with me. This is not about you, but the Princess.”

Stella sidled into the room and sat on the edge of the chair opposite Jack. She looked like she had been crying. This wasn’t going well.

“Stella, tell me about how the Princess treated you and the boys? She seemed a little crazy when they took her out of here screaming about her children, and she knew they weren’t hers.”

“Oh, but she did think they were hers. I mean, she really thought they were hers. I didn’t contradict her since she could get me fired, but she told everyone they were her children, and everyone just let it be. She was mean, though. She beat those boys for no reason at all, not that she should have been beating them, to begin with. I don’t believe that is the way to discipline a child. The boys were afraid of her, and she taught then nothing. They can barely read, and write and I think that was due to the people around here helping them with words so they could read some simple books. I hate to say it, but those boys can’t run the Kingdom. They need help and training. Your Majesty, I hope you are going to stay here and run the Kingdom. I am worried that things are simply going to go down here.”

“Don’t worry Stella, I am not going anywhere soon. I will see my people through this, and hopefully, the royal twin will be able to take over for me eventually. I will stand by my people even if it means giving up my dreams of living a regular life.

“So glad to hear that your Majesty.” Stella got up and moved at a much happier pace after her talk with Jack ended.

The next to enter was the gate guard, John. Jack asked him if the Princess left the castle a lot. The guard started to laugh. “Are you kidding me? She left early in the morning with the twins and returned late at night, usually escorted by some bum. Certainly not the life for a child of any age. She didn’t care about them.”

“And my parents didn’t do anything about this behavior of their grandchildren? I can’t believe this.”

Joanne bursts into the room. “Jack, the doctor’s DNA results are here. Quick open them.”

Jack ripped open the envelope that was still sealed. The guard, who had escorted her upstairs with the sealed enveloped, retreated and closed the door. His boss remained as he was not asked to leave. Jack was silent. There was no smile.

“What’s going on, Jack,” Joanne asked, although afraid of the answer.

“Those boys are not our children either. This can’t be happening. I am glad the Princess wasn’t corrupting our boys, but where are our boys,” Jack was shouting now.

Joanne stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean by not our boys, either?”

“They don’t match our DNA, either Joanne. Now I really don’t know what is going on. Mom and Dad didn’t even defend themselves. Is it possible they thought they were their grandson’s and that ditzy Princess sold them on the Black Market or something? She sure seemed to know where to get the first set to change, and I can see her wanting the money the boys would bring on the Black Market. Oh, God, please don’t let that be the answer. She could have also sold them as single children to disguise them. Though by now, there might be two boys walking around that look alike and are most likely blond like us. Hard to tell as babies, but teenagers really look alike. Now he had to search the Kingdom and the town and hope that no one had left the area and took one or both of them away. He should check the mainland as well. He would send out a royal proclamation requesting information.

Just then, Priscilla is escorted to the office. “Jack, where have you been all this time? I have been worried about you and Oliver. You just disappeared without a word.”

“Priscilla, you watch the news and read the newspapers I am sure you know damn well where I have been and what has been going on and now my biological children are also missing.”

“I am sorry to hear that, but when are you coming home to us?”

“I am not coming home to you. I want a divorce immediately. I have always been in love with Joanne, and we’re getting married as soon as the divorce is final by a Justice of the Peace. We will hold a proper wedding once we find all of our children and have them in one place. You, I believe, married me for the status of Princess only. Well, that isn’t happening.”

“What do you think that bitch wants,” and she points to Joanne?

“I want a man who is not afraid to stand up for what he wants and who will live with me in poverty because he loves me, although he certainly doesn’t have to. I love Jack, and always will. He is the father of my children, both biological and the two we were given by God to raise, and they are fine boys at that. Go away, Priscilla, and leave us be in our current grief.”

Jack requested a lawyer from town to come to the castle immediately after drawing up the divorce papers and to finalize the divorce as quickly as possible. He planned to marry Joanne as soon as possible. No more waiting for the woman of his dreams.

Now back to the proclamation to the return of his sons, the princes. He thought about the wording.

‘To the fine people of my country, the Kingdom of Bhatangary and our friends from the town and mainland, I beseech thee to come forward if you know of two boys who look alike. They most likely have blond hair and blue eyes, although that can’t be wholly established at this point. The boys would be about 16 years old. They may be living together with one family or living separately with two different families. These boys are the royal Princes, Prince Oliver Mason Wright and Prince John Jacob Wright, mine and Joanne Wright’s legal sons that were switched at birth by an unscrupulous person or persons unknown while at the hospital. We just discovered we have been raising someone else’s twin boys as our own. I plan to get to the bottom of this. I am offering a reward of USD 50,000 for the return of my two boys. Please, people, search your souls and do the right thing. If your twins went missing at that time, I also want information on that.

Signed Prince Jack Mason Wright, acting Prince of Bhatangary’

Once the proclamation was sent out, Jack sent everyone out of the office and began his search for all papers during the timeframe and then began the tedious task of looking through them for any helpful information. He came across the name Prince Richard Joseph Wright. He wasn’t familiar with this name. Richard was married to Princess Jane Susanna Wright Nee Lewis. Now, where did they fall on the family tree? Jack kept searching. Hours went by, and then the checkbook showed up. Jack looked at his father’s script. He began noticing a monthly fee of USD 50,000 that went on for at least 16 years to Richard.

Could this be a clue? Jack still had no idea who he was. He went to his father’s box of old family pictures. He found his father as a child, but there was something a little different about some of the photos. Sometimes he was wearing glasses. Then he came across a picture of him with another boy who looked just like him. Twins? Identical twins except one of them wore glasses. His father didn’t, so maybe that was Richard, although the one with glasses could now be wearing contact lenses.

Jack headed down to the jail. He had to talk to his father, the King. At least he hoped he was the King. Things were so complicated right now. Anything was possible.

“Sire? It has come to my attention that you have an identical twin and that he wore glasses. As I watched you here for several minutes, I noticed you squinting at the newspaper. Just who are you?”

“Jack, I am sorry for all the subterfuge. I usually wear contact lenses but didn’t get the chance to put them in before they arrested me. Like you, John never wanted to be a King, but I did. We both married, and John initially accepted the seat on the throne as the older brother, but it just wasn’t to his taste. I was born to the throne. We talked to our wives, and they both agreed to go on with the charade if that would make us happy. The thing is you are not my son, and the boys are not my grandchildren, and they are safe with their grandfather at my estate and have been since your father first got the crazy idea to kidnap them and raise them to be the future King. Like us, one is strong, and one is not. The oldest should go to the throne, but like us, the oldest is not suitable for the job. Even though John didn’t want to be the King and run the country, he had been taught everything so he could raise the boys correctly. That ditzy Princess was a simple nuisance, and I don’t know why I kept her on with all the stuff she pulled and is still pulling. I ignored her antics. I guess I should have paid more attention, but really the boys are safe. I will have my brother John send the boys over, and you can run the DNA tests on them. They will pass, you will see.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this earlier before I went through all this? I have caused quite a stir on my own, which could have been avoided, and poor Joanne was heartbroken when those boys weren’t ours and thought they might have been lost forever.

Jack left the jail and headed back to the castle. In all his worry about his sons, he had forgotten that it was the Christmas season. He stopped at the local church and watched a live play. An angel was releasing a dove of peace. Around the angel are lighted candles, pine cones, and a small wooden donkey.

Jack relaxed and believed that all would be well. It seemed his son just might be able to take over the throne once he turned 18. Jack would see him prepared. Although what to do about Oliver not wanting to be a prince either was a problem. Jack didn’t go about it the right way either and part of this mess was his fault. He loved Joanne and his sons, all four of them. He would do his duty and then go on with his life as a regular man. He just didn’t feel like he was supposed to be the King.

Punishment Meted Out

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

As the plane was coming in for a landing, Jack snapped out of his reverie. He looked across at Joanne, who was obviously thinking as well. The boys were talking quietly, but not loud enough to hear what they were saying.

Their lives are about to change in a big way for all of them. It was most definitely going to be an unpleasant change. He had no desire to arrest his parents and Princess Isabella, but if they did what it appears they have done then they must be arrested and his father, the King, must abdicate his thrown and Jack must take over and rule the Kingdom until Oliver (his real son) is ready to do it himself.

Both boys threw themselves into Joanne’s arms. She held them, and the three of them cried. Jack wanted to join them, but he had something he had to do, no matter how unpleasant it was. He disembarked, and directions were given for the security team to keep an eye on Joanne and the boys.

Jack hired a car to take him, Joanne and the boys to the island kingdom. He was dropped off at the police station in the town outside the castle. Joanne and the boys were taken to the nearest hotel to wait for the next step in this terrible situation. There was a chill in the air and Jack pulled his coat closer. Bits of snow clung here and there and the water surrounding the island had some ice in it although it wasn’t frozen solid.

Jack headed inside the police station and talked to Marcus Green. They hadn’t seen each other since Jack left the Kingdom 16 years ago, but now was not the time to become reacquainted. Jack explained in detail what he had believed had happened to his and Joanne’s sons, and about the boys they raised, thinking they were the real princes all along, and the DNA testing proved that they were not. He told him what he remembered about the time of the birth and the grandfatherly man and the young girl with the double pram with twins in it and that coincidentally there was a bomb threat, and the hospital had to be evacuated, and when the twins were returned to the nursery, they were missing their bracelet alarms.

When they tried to get testing done on their boys, someone kept preventing them from getting a DNA test. After finally getting the police in Pennsylvania to escort the DNA checks to the lab and they came back that neither he nor Joanne were the parents of the boys they raised, he was horrified to realize that his parents must have kidnapped his children and kept them from removing them from the Kingdom to be raised.

Jack requested Marcus to come with him to the castle and ask to have the boys brought out and tested. He also wanted to talk to his parents and Princess Isabella if she was still there. Marcus assured him that she was and that she was raising a set of twins and that she claimed to have the legal rights to them. He never contested her claim, so nothing was done about it. No one knew that Jack had no idea that she was raising the boys. They just assumed that they turned the boys over to her to make up for the divorce.

Jack was shocked at what he heard. None of his friends thought that it would be unusual for him to give up his children along with his crown. No one asked him or wondered why?

Jack decided to go to the castle now and see his sons. Marcus and his patrol came along. It was apparent that they would be arresting the King, Queen, and Princess from what Jack has told him and the proof he has. Princess Isabella flaunted her custody of the boys, so he believes Jack, and he was also shocked that Jack’s parents would do such a thing. This was going to be a difficult task to do.

Approaching the castle gate, Marcus Green, the police chief, demands the gates to open. After stating his business, the gates opened, and Jack joined then by Joanne and the two boys they raised, entered, along with Marcus.

“What’s going on here,” the King demanded?

“Sorry, Sire, but it seems that Jack here has proof that you have kidnapped his two sons and had Princess Isabella raise them. We must run a DNA test on your two grandsons and see just who are their parents as it has been proven that the two boys they have raised are not their children biologically. The hospital records show the day they were discharged was the day of the bomb scare, and many people remember the story of the grandfatherly man who always came in and one day brought a young girl with a double pram with twins in it. Both disappeared right after the alarm was sounded, and the hospital evacuated. I have brought the town’s doctor to do the DNA test, so there is no chance of trickery. Bring the boys and the Princess down now, Sire!”

The Princess was screaming at the top of her lungs to leave her babies alone. She was totally delusional. “Nooooooooooo,” she continued screaming and holding onto the boys.

The boys were confused since they had not been privy to the story of their real lives. They had been told that their father left their mother and was killed in a plane accident. They thought the Princess was their mother, and no one told them otherwise.

Now they were escorted downstairs separate from the Princess. She was cuffed and taken off to the local jail in town.

The story was explained to them in full, and they met Jack and Joanne, and both boys who, of course, had the exact same names. The four 16-year-olds stared at each other, and none of them said a word. The actual royal children were blond-haired and blue-eyed, just like Jack and Joanne.

The doctor swabbed each boy and went to run the tests supervised by a patrolman.

In the meantime, Marcus now had to explain to the King and the Queen that they were both guilty of kidnapping as well or at the very least aiding and abetting in the abduction, and for that, they would also reside in the town jail while it was decided what would be done about them. They may have thought they were doing what was best for the kingdom, but it was still illegal, and they drew the Princess in and got her involved in their scheme, and she lost her sanity and really thought they were her children. They didn’t do her any favors. The town had already voted, and no matter what the King was finally sentenced to, he would most likely have to abdicate his throne. The townspeople were horrified that the man they looked up to had done such a thing. He couldn’t claim that for 16 years, he had no idea children were living in the castle and in the nursery.

Jack knew that meant he would have to step up for now, and considering that the Princess raised his royal sons, it could be for a long time until Oliver would be ready to take over for his father.

To spare the King and Queen, the full humiliation, the chief of police, didn’t handcuff them. He had them led to the town jail to join Princess Isabella, who was still wailing over her children. He put them in a quieter area by themselves and went back to see what was going on in the castle and if he was still needed. He and Jack sat down to talk.

“Jack, do you have any idea what to do at this point concerning the Kingdom. I know you haven’t really been in touch. Your few friends bragged about the money they were making to let you think that all was going well here. I am sorry I didn’t notice anything strange going on. I had no idea what the Princess was doing, but since she told everyone, except the boys, that their father had left them for her to raise, I didn’t think anything of it. I knew you didn’t want to be part of running the Kingdom.” Marcus sighed, disgusted with himself. He should have been a better friend to Jack.

“Someone shut the Princess up. Use a potion if necessary to calm her down. She is getting on my nerves,” Marcus yelled to the other side of the office near the holding cell where they had her.

Well, Marcus,” Jack said thoughtfully, “ I am going to have to go through all my dad’s records for the last 16 years to see what has been going on. I know he is young, but I wonder if he has some kind of mental health problem. That could account for his crazy behavior. I think he should have a full physical and mental workup by the doctor from the mainland. Specialists in mental health and I will get busy going through his books, plus I need to talk to those poor children. They are bewildered and upset right now, and that includes the two I raised as my own. To be honest, I am confused myself. How could this have happened?”

“I was looking at those two boys, and I am not sure they are mine either. They have blond hair, but there is no resemblance to Joanne or I. You don’t think that crazy Princess or my parents actually did another switch to throw everyone off?”

“Jack, that is quite a conspiracy you have going there,” Marcus mused. “Though after what I have seen so far, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

“I am going to head over to the castle and talk to the family first and then the servants to get their ideas on what might have been going on while I was gone,” Jack said.

Back to the Kingdom of Bhatangary

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Once settled in the private jet with drinks in hand, the family wondered what would happen to them once arriving in the Kingdom of Bhatangary. Will they be welcomed? Will they be turned away and have to fight their way in?

Jack studied the law, and kidnapping was definitely a felony crime, and his parents and Princess Isabella were definitely in trouble if they have done what Jack is figuring they have done.

Once they arrived, he would get in touch with Marcus Green, his best friend from school. He is now the chief of police of the town outside the royal castle. His territory can include the castle if it is something that affects the people living in the village outside the castle.

If the King and Queen kidnapped the royal princes and stopped them from possibly taking over the throne if something had happened to his dad the King, then he is involved, and so is the townsfolk. Once they land he will talk to him and explain the situation and get him to open the castle up to him, Joanne and the boys and if their real boys are there, and their DNA matches Jack’s and Joanne’s then the King and Queen will be arrested and asked to abdicate as they have broken federal law. So will anyone else involved in the situation. There were all the people following Jack and Joanne around and keeping an eye on them both before they left for their future homes and after arriving at their new homes. It is also assumed that Princess Isabella was part of the switch and that she was the one taking care of the children all this time. She was not qualified as a nanny, and therefore the two royal princes wouldn’t have been taught all the right life choices as a King to be in charge.

Jack can’t believe his parents would be sick enough to steal his children just to make sure they had a royal prince to succeed the King if something were to happen. He had no desire to be the King, but if worse had come to worse, he would have stepped up until his child, one of the princes, could have taken over. How could they feel so little trust in him? He was born a prince, and he was brought up as a royal prince. He wouldn’t have let the Kingdom down if they needed him to take over. It hurt that they didn’t trust him to do the right thing if necessary. They knew where he was at all times. They could have gotten a hold of him whenever if it had been necessary.

Sure he had declared that he didn’t want to be the King, and that was definitely ok as long as he would have done the right thing in the end. And he would have. He and Joanne had talked about it because it was a possibility, and they were taking the royal heirs to other areas. Maybe they had been selfish in their desires and taking the children away, but now it seems as if they didn’t take the royal princes away after all. They were taken from them without their knowledge.

Finally, everyone fell silent until it was announced that they would be landing soon. Jack glanced out the window at the landscape and the water surrounding the island of the Kingdom. The water was shimmering, and if the situation hadn’t been so terrible he would have enjoyed the sight.

The DNA Check

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Jack didn’t know what to do. He wanted to deal with his parents and ex-wife, Princess Isabella, on his own. However, Joanne had a point. This did involve her and the two boys they had raised as their own sons.

While he mulled this over, he waited anxiously for the patrolman to return with the DNA results.  He stared at the snow-covered mountains from afar. He finally decided that if the boys were indeed not theirs, then he would take Joanne, Oliver, and John with him to confront his parents. They would have had messed with all of their lives.

The policeman finally came running into the office, waving the papers showing the DNA of the twins was no match to either Joanne or Jack. Jack swore, Joanne started crying, and the two boys just stood there with their mouths hanging open.

“You’re really not our mom and dad,” John finally blurted out, hurt in his voice? He looked to his brother for support, and Oliver was fighting tears. “Ah man, life’s not fair, it’s just not fair. You have been the best parents even if you did split us apart for our own good and to try and prevent this from happening. I don’t care that I am not a real prince. I didn’t know anything about it anyhow, so you can’t miss what you’ve never had, they always say. I feel sorry for the real Prince Oliver and Prince John. Held captive all these years and no idea what they’ve been told is not real.

“Jack, we’ve got to go and rescue our other sons. Now that the secret is out, do you think they are still at risk,” Joanne asked Jack quietly?

“I don’t want to take a chance. We are going to have a police escort, and I will call for a private jet to take us to the Kingdom of Bhatangary. The plane has no connection to the company, so there shouldn’t be any problems, but I’m hiring a 24-hour security detail.

“Besides telling your parents your suppositions, you need to tell Priscilla. She is either in on it or worried sick.”

Recheck the DNA

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Jack checked with the lab and made new appointments for DNA testing. He was getting anxious about the results, he had to admit to himself. Somehow he is feeling that things aren’t going to go their way. What if the twins aren’t theirs? He loved those boys and breaking up their family, and possibly another one, if indeed the twins had been switched, would be heart-breaking.

“I made new appointments at the lab for DNA testing. I explained the situation about all of us being tested at the same time to eliminate possible mistakes considering our unusual situation and what had already happened. They are fine with all of us being done at one time, and we can come over today. No need to wait any longer.”

“Let’s go this morning then and hope for quick results. The other doctor said it would take 24 to 72 hours to get the test results. Hopefully, it will be just the one day,” Joanne said.

“Ok, boys get dressed, and let’s get this DNA testing over with,” Joanne called out.

“Jack, you really seem nervous. What’s up? Are you afraid they aren’t our boys?”

“Joanne, I was studying the pictures of John last night, and it occurred to me that both you and I and our families are mainly blondes with blue eyes. The boys both have black hair and brown eyes. I am afraid of what the tests will show. I would hate to think that the hospital made a mistake.”

“That would undoubtedly be heartbreaking on all sides. I have loved these boys and you all of my adult life, and having to possibly legally have to give them up is indeed sad. What about the other parents? What if we have to drop a bombshell on them? Of course, that is if they can be found even. We are just guessing here, no hard facts.

“Boys get a move on. We want to get this over and behind us as soon as possible,” Jack shouted.

Piling into the SUV they all quieted down again and resumed their own gloomy thoughts. Until DNA testing is done, nothing can be proven either way. As of right now, they are still family.

Somberly everyone climbed out of the SUV and headed inside. Jack noticed a man bundled up in a parka follow them in from the parking lot. There was something familiar about him. They waited to be called in, and all four went into the back to get tested. All swabs were labeled and put into an envelope. Jack asked if they could hand-deliver it to the lab site that did the testing and was told no, but they understood the urgency and would get them there as soon as possible.

One of the phlebotomists was on her way to lunch and offered to drop them on their way. Usually, they have to wait for someone to pick them up, but due to the urgency, they agreed to let her take them. She bundled up and grabbed the package of swabs. She started toward the door, and Jack noticed the man was putting on his coat without being tested. This didn’t sit right with him, and he was already suspicious, so Jack followed him.

He got out to the parking lot as the girl screamed and fought with the man. He had her on the ground, grabbing for the swabs which were under her. Jack grabbed him and yanked him off of her and cold-cocked him, knocking him out. He held the shivering girl as she cried and trying to see if she was hurt.

“He tried to grab the package of swabs. Who was he,” the phlebotomist wanted to know, tears running down her face, freezing as they ran in rivulets? “He kept screaming give them to me, and I knew they were important, so I didn’t let go, but they are probably damaged after all of that snow they were lying in, although there was less snow on the parking lot than there was in the surrounding area and the light shining through the snow was melting the snow on the parking lot fairly quickly.”

“I thank you for going to the trouble and try to save them, but they aren’t worth your life. Let me tie him up and call the local police.”

Jack helped her up and then struggled to get the guy up off the ground and inside the building. They helped their employee get wrapped up in a blanket after checking for injuries, and the receptionist called the police.

Joanne was wondering what had happened. Jack moved quickly. He told her how he had noticed this guy around wherever they were and when he moved to follow the girl with the swabs and hadn’t even had a test done he was glad he had gone after them as the man was beating the girl and trying to get the samples and then told Jack told her he remembered having seen him as the EMT at that accident and how he had pushed the samples to the side and then stuffed them in his pocket. He is becoming more and more suspicious that something going on at home was at play here. Why ate they being stopped from having a DNA test done?

“Jack, would the King and Queen stoop to something so low? Could they have switched their twins with two other boys? Why would they do that? Stealing babies is probably a felony. I understand laws are different in the kingdom, but technically we had our babies in the general public hospital, and therefore, stealing those babies may have been a felony. I want to know why?”

“I am guessing that they wanted the boys to be able to take my spot when the King dies or abdicates. Well, the oldest son anyhow. They don’t split thrones up. However, since Oliver is not in excellent health they would train both boys to be in charge of the kingdom if necessary. I am guessing here that they kidnapped our sons and put them in the castle, most likely with Princess Isabella. Remember, she wasn’t too upset about the divorce. Maybe she knew the boys would be hers to raise, and it would be all up to her. In fact, now I remember that night and nobody was too concerned about anything. I think they had this planned. What bothers me is that my friends didn’t let me in on what was about to happen. I guess money can buy anything.”

The cops had arrived, and everyone was talking at once. “Quiet everyone,” the head cop yelled. “I want one person here to speak and that is the guy purporting to be a prince. First off, sir, do you have identification?”

“I have my royal papers from the Kingdon of Bhatangary of which I am the prince. Next, in line after my father, the King. Sixteen years ago I met Joanne and we wanted to live a normal life, and we had twins in a hospital on the mainland. Unbeknownst to us, my parents seemed to have switched our twins, the royal princes, with someone else’s twins. We raised these boys, thinking they were ours and the royal princes. I just found out the son I was raising didn’t have a missing Kidney like he was supposed to. I contacted Joanne who had the other son, and we had specialized testing done. The Kidney was there, and the doctor said it was possible it grew back if it hadn’t been permanently damaged. We have been trying to do DNA testing to see if the hospital hadn’t inadvertently given us the wrong twins, but there weren’t other twins and every time we had a test done someone (mainly the guy I have tied up over there would steal them and destroy them which brought back memories of the day our boys were discharged and the grandfatherly looking man and the very young girl with a double pram with twins happened to be there during a bomb scare. I have to go back to the Kingdom and confront my parents and the princess. They stole our boys, I think, and that would be ample cause for the King to have to step down and abdicate the throne. Kidnapping is a felony.

“Though Joanne, I will have to step in and manage the Kingdom for a while until things are set with the royal twins, and they are ready to take over as King. That is if they are since we haven’t seen their education all these years. At least they have each other for support.”

Before I leave I would like to get the results of the DNA test just to make sure. Can one of your patrolmen escort the sample over to the lab and have it tested, and then could you watch out for my family?”

“Yes, sir, we can.”

“Oh Jack, no, I want to be there for this. They are my children too! And I don’t want to leave the boys here alone. We should all go,” Joanne pleaded with Jack.

All four of them piled into Joanne’s SUV and nervously started for the lab. Joanne lived in a beautiful area, and here they were passing a glassy lake, calm as can be, which sure didn’t match their emotions.

All of them were lost in their own thoughts. Jack had suspicions that all wasn’t as it should be. He felt that they had been tricked when the boys were born. He vaguely remembers that grandfatherly type man who was hanging around the nursery every day.  The day they were discharged the man was there with a young girl with a double pram. Twins? Neither their twins or those in the pram had any hair. Following the fire drill, he was beginning to remember that the man, girl, and babies were gone. Because of the drill, things were backed up, and they rushed them out of there without checking identities carefully. They had the only twins in the nursery.

If these DNA tests show that they aren’t the parents, he would have to go back to Bhatangary and face his parents. Would they stoop to stealing the babies so that they had a prince to be an heir?

He remembered seeing that EMT in the office while they were being tested, and then he disappeared after they finished the testing. On the way home, the receptionist, who just happened to have the tests to be dropped off at the lab, has an accident. He remembered the EMT pushed all the samples out of the way, and now that he thought about it he jammed them into his pocket. He suddenly disappeared, and another guy was working on the woman.

Jack checked out the office when they arrived. A man followed them in bundled up in a parka with a hood, and he took a seat but didn’t approach the receptionist to check-in.

“What are you thinking about Jack,” Joanne asked?

“Joanne I have a horrible idea. I think it is possible that my parents stole our babies and replaced them with others. I remember that grandfatherly man who was always around, and on the day of discharge and the fire drill they were in a hurry to get people out, and he came in with a young girl with a double pram with two bald babies. In the confusion, they could have changed the babies, and if the name tags were missing they would think it was just the confusion going on around them.”

“Oh Jack, you don’t think they would go so far as to steal the twins, do you?”

“Actually I do, to tell you the truth.” He proceeded to tell her what he could remember.

They had to get the tests done as soon as possible and keep them from this man who is following them.

It would explain Oliver having two kidneys instead of one. It wasn’t really Oliver he was raising.

“Linda what did Joey do with my communicator. What am I supposed to do with this? I can’t get anything up, but a picture of people holding blank word bubble signs,” Ron asked. “I have to contact the leader. Now!”
“Here, you can use mine and see if you can make some other contact,”

These tidbits have been continuing from week to week for about 5 months or more now…hard to write a continuing story when you only have 280 characters per piece and a picture to fit in but I am doing it! This is getting harder and not sure how much longer I can continue it.

Jack is waiting in Joanne’s family room in the farmhouse while she puts some dinner together for them. His eyes roam over the pictures on the mantle of John, identical to his son Oliver. Something is niggling at the back of his mind. Both he and Joanne come from a long line of ancestors with blond hair and blue eyes.

Looking at the pictures of John remind him that the boys have black hair and brown eyes. A rarity in their families. Jack continues to stare at the pictures and looking for some other resemblances to them as the parents and this current problem of the DNA of the boys since finding out that Oliver has 2 kidneys after all. Even though the doctor says, it is possible for a kidney that isn’t permanently damaged to regrow.

They have to redo the DNA testing as soon as possible. The receptionist seemed alright after the accident, and Jack had noticed the EMT had pushed the mail out of his way so he could work on her before moving her out of her vehicle. Jack hadn’t seen him pick up the damaged swabs and stuff them in his pocket though.

Relaxing there on the couch had caused him to fall asleep. Joanne covered him up when she brought in dinner, rather than waking him. He must be as tired as she was, and therefore after making sure the kids got home, she would head for bed herself.

A noise awakened him, and he found himself staring at a beautiful sunrise. The glow from it brightened up the whole room. The curtains hadn’t been drawn last night, and his dinner sat on the table beside him in case he woke up after a short sleep and was still hungry. Now he realized the noise came from the kitchen, and he hurried to see what was being served for breakfast.
