Weekend Writing Prompt #121 – Teapot – by Sammi Cox

Weekend Writing Prompt #120 – Vintage – by Sammi Cox

Sammi Cox’s Rules:

The challenge is simple: each week you will be given an exact number of words you can use to write a poem or piece of prose.  You can use any format or style you like; go wherever your inspiration takes you.  The only rules are these:

  • your poem/prose must contain this week’s word.  The word does not have to count towards the exact word count total – it can be in the title, or the first letters of the lines of a poem can spell it out – you can be as creative as you want as long as it’s there somewhere.
  • the length of your poem/prose must match the number of words stated in this week’s challenge.  No more.  No less.

*continuation from last weekend and a couple of months worth

 (Last Weekend I wrote)

Connie and Ron noticed that the bag of items Rhonda was hugging were items they had recently seen at the Vintage Store.

****************

Rhonda lowered the bag she had been rocking and took out a glass teapot. She closed her eyes and seemed to be thinking about something. The expression on her face was serene, and then suddenly she raised her hand holding the teapot and threw it at the wall.

Trouble at Dawn

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

It was predawn, and I was out searching for my cat who had snuck outside last night when someone opened the door. She is an indoor cat, and I have no idea why she suddenly wanted to go out.

When I got her at the flea market, the person offering the cat told me that she had been attacked by her
Doberman Pinscher and was afraid to go out. That was perfect because I wanted an inside cat. After discussion with my husband, he agreed that I could get the cat. I took her and put her inside my jacket, and she curled around my neck to keep warm. The days were getting colder.

I named her Sheba for Queen of Sheba, and she was indeed a Queen. She did spend a lot of time watching out the large picture window at the lake and occasionally at our Doberman Pinscher. She had never shown any interest in going outside, so I was surprised when she went darted out the door.

We searched for an hour or so, but she was nowhere to be found. I spent the night crying and then was up early as dawn was approaching. I headed out to the side of our cleared beach where there was a lot of overgrowth that had ice crystals frozen on it, and there were patches of thin ice here and there.

I started searching in that area, gingerly watching my steps in case that she was under the ice. I called and called her name. The ice was crackling under my feet as I walked through the area listening carefully. Suddenly I was awarded with a weak meow. I tried to follow her week cries as I ambled through the expanse of overgrowth.

By this time, my family had joined me in the search. I told them where she was, and we discussed how to get her out of the area. She was stuck in an area that was mostly water with the brush and ice on top. My husband warned me of the possibility of her being aggressive due to her fear and her feeling of being trapped and possibly hurt. She might attack me as I tried to touch her and pull her out.

I decided to take my chance. Calling to her softly, I started to pet her. Good so far. I put the other hand down and pulled her towards me. She began to pull back, but then she relaxed, and I pulled her out of the spot where she had been stuck. I held her against me and headed for the warmth of the house. Needless to say, she never snuck outside again. She was sufficiently scared.

Three Things Challenge: PL165

Rules from Paula:

Welcome to the Three Things Challenge. Every day at 10PM (PST) I will post three seemingly unconnected things that will, hopefully, ignite your muse. You don’t have to use all three things if you don’t want to. There are no restrictions on length, style, genre, or anything. Simply read the prompt, see where your muse takes you, and bring us along for the ride. Use 3TC as a tag if you’d like and link back to this prompt, or post your link in the comments below so others can find you.

Happy Writing! 😀

Today’s prompt: monopoly, goldfish, Rome

Board Games!

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Mandy looked at her little goldfish Mona and wished she could play games with her. She was so bored. She had just moved to Rome and she wondered if they had a version of monopoly using Rome streets. They had put out some different cities. Which brought her back to the problem of who would play with her anyhow.

Just then there was a knock on the door. It was the pizza boy and he was definitely a hunk. She wouldn’t mind playing with him.

He liked her too and after talking for a bit he agreed to come back after his shift and play board games with her.

Uphill Battle

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

John was pushing his aunt, Edith up the hill and could barely budge her. He saw his friends going to the park, and he called them over and asked them for help. At first, they balked because they were in a hurry, but John begged and pleaded that he wanted to go with them, but he was stuck getting his aunt up the hill. They were all going to the same place.

Finally, they agreed, and they all pushed the person in the line ahead of them. Slowly inch by inch, huffing and puffing, they got her up the hill.

Rules from Linda G Hill:

Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so there’s no need to stick to the same “theme.”

The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!

5. Have fun!

Enjoying the Beach

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

Anya and Rollie were just sitting on the beach day after day, enjoying the warm weather and occasional thundershower. They were at a stage in their life where they didn’t have a schedule to be followed and were happy just being with each other no matter what life brought them.

They had both lost their spouses and had always been friends, so it was natural for them to spend their remaining time together. They each had their own hut, but after a particularly nasty storm, Anya’s was completely destroyed. They had no choice but to share Rollie’s. Anya was horrified. She asked him to see if there was another one available.

He asked, but the people living here were long term owners. He asked at the office if they were going to rebuild it. They were sorry, but they lost ten cabins in the storm and couldn’t afford to rebuild them all. All owner’s names would be put in a hat, and they would draw out five names and restore those.

Rollie told Anya the news, and they prayed that Anya’s was one of the ones to be rebuilt. Anya cried when she heard her name called.

Laundry List

By Teresa Smeigh 2019

The dirty old man noticed the laundry list and the fees. His clothes could use a proper washing, but he didn’t have the money for the charges.  He looked down at his guitar and wondered if anyone would appreciate his playing in the town green?

He set up his playing station and began to play. At first, no one noticed him and then suddenly murmuring started and people began to point. The man knew he was good, but no one was showing their appreciation with coins or even bills.

A man approached him and asked him if he would like a job playing at his pub. The musician was over-joyed and asked him when as he needed time to get the money to get his clothes clean.

The owner of the pub said he wanted him tonight and he would lend him enough to get the clothes he had on washed and would add $20.00 for his payment. From then on his salary would be $30.00 a show and he would play two shows a night, every night.

The old man was delighted. The pub owner took him to the laundry and set up the payment for tonight. After tonight it would be up to him. He needed a bath before putting on clean clothes, and they just happened to do bathing at the laundry. He paid the fee and was clean and fresh and ready when his clothes were.

His show was a success, and he was paid. He went to the campground and rented a small lot for his tent. From that night on he played his two shows for $60.00 a night. His appearance drew those wanting to learn and so for a small fee the man taught those who were interested and when he passed on from this life they played a song for him to help him on his way.
